Marineworks and ESolution Partner on Next-Generation Marine ESS to Target Eco-Friendly Vessel Market
Marineworks and ESolution Join Forces on Next-Generation Marine ESS,
Accelerating Expansion into the Eco-Friendly Vessel Market
ESolution (CEO Kwon Jin-geun) announced on the 29th that it has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Marineworks (CEO Kim Yong-dae), a leading Korean smart ship solutions company, to jointly develop next-generation high-safety Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for eco-friendly vessels and expand into global markets.
As the global shipping industry accelerates its transition toward electrification amid the worldwide push for carbon neutrality (Net-Zero), the partnership represents a strategic alliance aimed at securing leadership in high-performance, high-safety ESS technologies—the core component of the rapidly growing eco-friendly vessel market, including electric-propulsion and hybrid vessels, driven by increasingly stringent environmental regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Unlike stationary ESS applications, marine ESS solutions must operate reliably under harsh maritime conditions such as saltwater exposure, vibration, and shock. As a result, exceptional safety and precise control technologies are essential. By combining their respective core competencies, the two companies aim to deliver one of the safest and most advanced marine energy solutions available.
Under the agreement, the companies will create strong technological synergies through close collaboration. Leveraging its experience in developing and commercializing stationary ESS solutions since 2017, ESolution will lead the development and production of marine ESS systems. Its contributions include high-precision Battery Management System (BMS) hardware and firmware incorporating functional safety design, heating and cooling thermal management technologies, fire propagation prevention technologies, and mechanical design technologies capable of maintaining durability under vibration and impact.
In particular, ESolution plans to establish industry-leading safety standards optimized for maritime environments through advanced battery packaging and structural design technologies that fundamentally prevent fire and thermal runaway.
Marineworks, recognized for its advanced expertise in navigation, communication, and integrated ship control platforms, is actively pursuing the development of eco-friendly electric tugboats as part of efforts to support carbon-neutral ports and replace conventional diesel-powered tug operations.
Marineworks will work closely with ESolution to further enhance marine ESS technology and integrate it into vessel platforms, maximizing system stability, interoperability, and energy efficiency.
The company also plans to leverage its extensive domestic and international shipbuilding and shipping industry networks to expand the deployment of electric tugboats across Korean ports while accelerating global business development and market expansion efforts.
The partnership has attracted attention as a collaboration between a company specializing in ESS technology—the core technology of eco-friendly vessels—and a company renowned for integrated ship control platforms, often described as the “brain” of a vessel.
Industry observers expect the alliance to become a significant turning point in enabling Korean companies to secure global leadership in the marine battery market, which is projected to grow into a multi-billion-dollar industry.
Kwon Jin-geun, CEO of ESolution, stated:
“This strategic partnership with Marineworks represents a pivotal opportunity for ESolution’s high-safety battery solutions to expand beyond land-based applications into the broader maritime ecosystem. Through the powerful combination of our technologies, we aim to establish new standards in the global eco-friendly marine ESS market and position ourselves as an irreplaceable leader in the industry.”
The two companies have also launched a dedicated task force (TF) immediately following the signing of the MOU and plan to begin prototype demonstrations and pursue major international classification certifications to accelerate market entry.
Through this partnership, Marineworks plans to advance the development of marine ESS technologies—one of the key components of eco-friendly electric propulsion vessels—and expand technology validation and commercialization efforts in conjunction with its eco-friendly tugboat business initiatives.
